Clive Ireland and Hamish White will have the NZ Sidecar Grand Prix silverware to keep them company on the trip back to Gisborne after emerging top of the pile at the Robertson Holden International Speedway.

Nineteen bikes completed three rounds of qualifying heats, with the top six point scorers progressing to the finals. The competitiveness of the field was illustrated by the fact that the twelve heats featured nine different race winners. 78p Paul Humphrey & Ben Franklin looked the goods, the only pairing to go through unbeaten, with 31p Richard & Alastair Horne the only other duo to win more than one race. Qualifiers were the two mentioned above plus 19p John Hannan & Lewis Cox, 32p Mark Whye & Sam Carter, 42p Steve King & Shaun Carter and 56g Clive Ireland & Hamish White. Other heat winners who were unable to register enough points to qualify were 6p Derek Ramsay & Tony Hislop, 51b Kim Johnston & Bryce Rose and 61b Sefton & Clinton Truuts, while 3nzg Deane & Rob Miller also had an unsuccessful evening.

Humphrey & Franklin dominated the running early on during finals also, winning the first heat and leading the second until their bike lost power and retired in smoke, throwing the title chase into disarray. Hannon & Cox survived a first-corner tangle with Whye & Carter, although the latter weren’t as lucky but did return to take part in later heats. Ireland & White were on the move, overtaking King & Carter in the first two heats – for victory on the second occasion. Ireland & White were top after two heats with eight points, ahead of the Horne brothers, King & Carter and Humphrey & Franklin equal on five points despite a DNF.

The close points situation saw the latter pairing appear for the final heat on the borrowed 51b machine, although they could not continue their form on the unfamiliar bike. Richard & Alastair Horne stormed to victory in the final heat, while Ireland & White managed to overtake King & Carter yet again to finish third and snatch overall victory by a single point. The Gisborne duo made the most passing moves in the finals, and were deserved winners once the dominant Humphrey & Franklin had fallen by the wayside. Richard & Alastair Horne would be rueing their poor second heat which saw them only score one point, but should be satisfied overall with runner-up in just their second season racing. Mark Whye & Sam Carter amazingly recovered from their early spill to occupy the final spot on the podium, defeating the unlucky Steve King & Shaun Carter in a run-off.
